Julie rolled her eyes. “What’s he freaking out about?”

Hat’s voice was unexpectedly grim. “Something’s not right.”

Julie put her phone aside as the queue crept forward. Slowly, she followed the various vehicles up to the gates and eventually turned in and stopped by the guardhouse.

Fred Orloffson, the blue-uniformed dwarf who was the gate guard during the day, was looking even less friendly than normal. His face was a wrinkled frown over the rich red beard that cascaded over his short body.

Julie rolled down the window manually, with some effort. “Hey, Fred!” She flashed her ID card.

“Sit still.” Fred pulled out a wand. An actual wand, with a big glowing magic jewel in the end. “This won’t take long.”

Julie stared at the wand in confusion. “What’s going on, Fred?”

“Sit still,” Fred repeated. He walked around Genevieve, waving the wand up and down the car like a metal detector. When he reached the driver’s door again, he stepped back. “Please step out of the car.”

“Okay, sure. What’s up with all this?” Julie stepped out, swiping Hat from the dashboard and jamming him over her head. “Normally you just look at my vehicle pass and I drive in.”

Fred gave her a long look, and for a second Julie thought she saw tears in his eyes. Then he held up the wand. “Spread your arms and legs.”

“Don’t be getting frisky on me, now.” Julie spread her feet and held her arms up, and Fred waved the wand up and down her body. It didn’t do anything.

Fred nodded and set down the wand, then picked up a clipboard. “Name and species,” he grunted.

Julie looked at him incredulously. “Fred, come on. You see me drive in here every day.”

Fred pressed his lips together. “Name and species, if you please.”

Julie searched his face, but it was as unreadable as a brick wall. She relented. “Julie Meadows. Human.”

He scribbled it down. “What is the purpose of your trip to this building?”

“Uh, I work here?” Julie told him. “You know this, man.”

“In what department?” Fred persisted.

“Recruitment.” Julie tapped the ID badge she’d clipped to the front of her jacket, which matched the beret. “Says so right here.”

“What type and level of magic powers do you possess?” Fred didn’t look up from his clipboard.

Julie rolled her eyes in annoyance. “Dude. None. I’m human, remember?”

“Do you have in your possession any magical artifacts, including, but not limited to: staves, wands, rings of power, invisibility cloaks, cloaks of levitation, amulets, powerful gemstones, magic mirrors, grimoires, or enchanted objects?” Fred droned.

“Can’t you just tell me what’s happening?” Julie pulled Hat off and held him in front of her.

Fred didn’t look up. “Please answer the question, Miss Meadows.”

Julie sighed. “Okay, sure. I do have a magical artifact. DUMB LE Dork, the old system.”

Fred barely glanced at Hat as he scribbled on his clipboard again. “Are
